i) List of Applicable standards

Medical devices are subject to strict general controls and procedural regulations. The development and use of standards is vital to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical devices. Please refer to link below for the list of applicable standards for Medical devices released by BIS: Applicable Standard (BIS)

ii) CDSCO approved Testing Centres

CDSCO has listed Medical Device Testing Laboratories to carry out test or evaluation of a medical device and for conducting Performance Evaluation of In-Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device.

iii) Clinical Study Sites-ICMR INTENT network

Clinical studies play a vital role in determining safety & effectiveness of medical devices. ICMR-INTENT network serves as pan-India network of institutes with proven excellence in clinical research.

iv) IP facilitators

The “Scheme for Facilitating Startups Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP)” scheme provides start-ups with facilitators for filing and processing their applications for patents, designs and trademarks. The professional charges of the facilitators are reimbursed by the CGPDTM office in accordance with the provisions of the SIPP Scheme. Funding Opportunities


i) ICMR Extramural Investigator Initiated Research Grant- Small Grant:

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) provides financial assistance for Indian scientists working outside ICMR institutes to conduct research in the fields of medicine, public health, and allied disciplines aimed at improving health of Indians under its Extramural Research programe.

Multidisciplinary projects finding solutions to priority health problems for the country by validation or evaluation of interventions having established proof-of- concept.

ii) Department of Science & Technology

Government of India under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology supports various programs on Science, technology and innovation based entrepreneurship, and enables promotion of knowledge driven and technology intensive ventures / startups.

iii) Department of Biotechnology

Department of Biotechnology provides financial assistance to MedTech Startups through several Funding opportunities schemes of BIRAC.

iv) Department of Pharmaceuticals

The Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers formulates and implements policies relating to drugs and pharmaceuticals, medical devices & diagnostics, dyestuff and dye intermediates. DoP has released many enabling national policies for promoting R&D and innovation and strengthening domestic manufacturing infrastructure in MedTech Sector in India.

v) Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India, a premier national R&D organisation, is among the world's largest publicly funded R&D organisation. Through various grants and schemes, CSIR has promoted innovation and human resource development.

CSIR has started the Mission Mode Project on Medical Instruments & Devices with the aim to put focused S&T efforts for the development of medical device segment. Several CSIR laboratories are already working in the area of medical devices from small electronic devices, bio-implants, biosensors to medical standards.
